Concentration means ‘with one centre’. It requires that we set up in the Mind some single idea of such a kind that to it we can refer every other idea that we have. Such an idea gives us the power of unifying our Mind. The central idea is that around which our Meditation takes place, and to which we tie our disparate thoughts. Meditation procedure always begins with Concentration.

To Meditate well, we proceed in stages:

  1. We begin by withdrawing attention from the world around us.
  2. We Concentrate upon some single idea or central aim.
  3. We begin Meditation.
  4. When Meditation is complete we move to Contemplation, which is the culmination of all our practice.
